On January 9, 2018 an earthquake of magnitude 7.6 occurred just 44 kilometres (27 mi) east of Great Swan Island off the coast of Honduras. The earthquake was felt across Central America at 8:51 p.m. local time. The earthquake occurred at a relatively shallow depth of about 10 km (6 mi) and fortunately little damage was done.
